General information

Two AstraZeneca vaccines are used for vaccination in Ukraine. Under a license agreement with AstraZeneca, one of them is manufactured in India (Serum Institute of India Ltd.) under the trade name VACCINE CHADOX1 NCOV-19 CORONA VIRUS (RECOMBINANT), COVISHIELD. The other – in South Korea (SK bioscience Co., Ltd.), under the trade name ASTRAZENECA VACCINE AGAINST COVID-19 . On February 15, 2021, both passed the approval procedure of the World Health Organization and were included in the list of vaccines that may be used for emergency use under the COVAX program.

COVISHIELD is a monovalent vaccine consisting of a single recombinant, replication-deficient chimpanzee adenoviral vector (ChAdOx1) encoding the S glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2. After administration, the S glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 is expressed locally, stimulating neutralizing antibody and cellular immune responses. The COVISHIELD vaccine is intended for active immunization of persons over 18 years of age for the prevention of coronavirus disease COVID-19. After administration, the COVISHIELD vaccine stimulates natural immunity, “making” the body produce antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. Developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca.

In accordance with Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 95 of 08.02.2021, which provides for registration of vaccines for the prevention of COVID-19 under obligation for emergency medical use, the COVISHIELD vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India Ltd is authorized for emergency use in Ukraine (registration certificate No. UA/18593/01/01. MoH of Ukraine order of 22.02.2021 No. 308).

AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is indicated for active immunization of persons aged 18 years and older for the prevention of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination course involves two doses administered intramuscularly, preferably into the deltoid muscle. The second dose should be administered 4–12 weeks after the first dose.

In accordance with Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 95 of 08.02.2021, which provides for the registration of vaccines for the prevention of COVID-19 under obligations for emergency medical use, the COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca / COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca, manufactured by SK bioscience Co., Ltd (No.97), Republic of Korea, is authorized for emergency use in Ukraine (registration certificate No. UA/18725/01/01. MoH of Ukraine order of 20.04.2021 No. 788).

How is the COVISHIELD vaccine administered

To obtain basic immunity, two doses of COVISHIELD vaccine must be administered at an interval of 4 to 12 weeks. A healthcare professional administers COVISHIELD vaccine intramuscularly, preferably into the deltoid muscle.

Patients should remain under the supervision of a healthcare professional for at least 15 minutes in order to promptly recognize possible signs of an allergic reaction. To develop protective immunity it is important to receive two doses; otherwise the vaccine may not work. Like any other vaccine, COVISHIELD does not provide 100 % protection against infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This vaccine does not cause COVID-19.

What should a patient do if they did not receive the second dose of the COVISHIELD vaccine on time?

If you did not receive the second dose of the COVISHIELD vaccine on time, tell your doctor and get vaccinated at the first opportunity. It is recommended to complete the vaccination course with the COVISHIELD vaccine and/or COVID-19 VACCINE ASTRAZENECA / COVID-19 VACCINE ASTRAZENECA.

Safety of the COVISHIELD vaccine

Like all medicinal products, the COVISHIELD vaccine can cause adverse events following immunization (AEFI). In clinical studies, most AEFIs were mild to moderate and resolved within a few days. The number of reports of AEFIs after the second dose was lower. In terms of frequency, the most common are: fever, general weakness, redness, swelling at the injection site, muscle pain, headache, drowsiness. After vaccination you may experience several adverse reactions at the same time. If any of the symptoms is persistent, consult your doctor.

Seek medical attention immediately if you develop symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, weakness or dizziness, palpitations, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing. Thrombosis has been observed in very rare cases after administration of the Covishield vaccine. Most cases were recorded within the first 14 days after vaccination.

For detailed information on the specifics of using this medicinal product and possible AEFI, please refer to the instructions.
