The Unified Clinical Protocol for the Provision of Primary, Specialized and Emergency Medical Care “Bronchial Asthma in Adults” (MoH order of September 30, 2026, No. 1451) has been entered in the Center’s List of Medical Technological Documents.
The document was developed on the basis of the international guidance Global Strategy for Asthma Management and Prevention (GINA) 2025, which makes it possible to harmonize Ukrainian clinical treatment practice with global standards. Methodological and informational support during development was provided by specialists of the State Expert Center.
The protocol contains step-by-step algorithms of action for physicians at all levels of medical care. It defines approaches to diagnosis and establishing the diagnosis, treatment, including severe forms and comorbid conditions, hospitalization, pharmacotherapy and follow-up of patients. It provides recommendations on the necessary resource provision and on developing local protocols at the level of healthcare facilities.
Why is this important?
Every year, more than 200 000 patients with bronchial asthma are registered in the country. However, the actual incidence may be considerably higher because of late diagnosis and underreporting. The growing number of cases is associated with environmental factors, urbanization, the war and lifestyle changes, and the long-term consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Implementing the new protocol will make it possible to improve the level of asthma control among patients, optimize the prescribing of inhaled medicinal products, and reduce the burden on the emergency care system and mortality rates.
For patients, it will improve access to modern, safe and patient-centered treatment and the achievement of symptom control, and will substantially improve quality of life.
Together with the protocol, physicians are offered an evidence-based clinical guideline adapted to the national health care system, “Clinical Management of Adult Patients with Bronchial Asthma.”
