Dexdor® (Dexmedetomidine): Evidence of an increased risk of mortality in intensive care unit patients aged ≤ 65 years when dexmedetomidine is used for deep sedation

Swiss agency for therapeutic products has published a Direct Healthcare Professional Communication (DHPC) containing important information for healthcare professionals who prescribe Dexdor® (Dexmedetomidin).

In coordination with Swissmedic, Orion would like to inform you of the following facts:

  • The study showed a mortality risk depending on age. The use of dexmedetomidine was associated with a higher risk of mortality than other sedatives in the age group ≤ 65 years (odds ratio 1,26; 95% confidence interval 1,02–1,56). The underlying mechanism is unknown.
  • When dexmedetomidine was used for light sedation, no effect on mortality was found.
  • These results should be weighed against the expected clinical benefit of using dexmedetomidine compared with other sedatives in young patients.
  • Dexmedetomidine is authorized only for sedation to a depth of 3 according to RASS in intensive care patients.
