EMA starts review of Varilrix vaccine (live attenuated vaccine containing varicella zoster virus, OKA strain)
EMA has started a review of the vaccine Varilrix, which is used for the prevention of chickenpox. The active substance in Varilrix is live attenuated varicella zoster virus (OKA strain).
Varilrix was authorized in the EU through national procedures. This has led to inconsistencies among Member States regarding the method of administration of the vaccine, as is known from the instructions for medical use in the countries where the vaccine is available.
EMA will review the available data on Varilrix and propose amendments to the package insert in order to harmonize the method of use of Varilrix in the EU.
Updated information for doctors and patients will be available on the EMA website once the review is complete.
