Background
Myocarditis and pericarditis can occur acutely or have a chronic course and may result from infection (including COVID-19) or exposure to toxic substances or radiation. Symptoms may include lethargy, shortness of breath, chest pain, or tachycardia. Severe cases can lead to damage to the heart muscle.
Cases of myocarditis and pericarditis were first reported internationally after vaccination with the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna. Most cases were recorded within a few days after the second dose of the vaccine, and recovery occurred within a few days (in some cases, up to two weeks).
Випадки міокардиту та перикардиту, що були зареєстовані на території Канади мали місце і після імунізації іншими вакцинами проти COVID-19. Станом на 11 червня 2021 року всього зафіксовано 53 випадки. З них 40 випадків після застосування вакцини Pfizer-BioNTech, 8 – Moderna та 4 – COVISHIELD / AstraZeneca. Двадцять вісім із цих випадків були зареєстровані у вакцинованих жіночої статі (віковий діапазон 20-78 років) та 25 – чоловічої (віковий діапазон 17-76 років).

Медичним працівникам рекомендовано враховувати можливість розвитку міокардиту та перикардиту під час диференціальної діагностики, у разі появи у вакцинованих болі в грудях, задишки, тахікардії або інших симптомів міокардиту та перикардиту після імунізації вакциною проти COVID-19. Це може дозволити виявляти захворювання на ранній стадії і призначати відпрвідне лікування.
