In Ukraine, opportunities have emerged for high-quality diagnosis and treatment of patients with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. For the first time, a standard of medical care "Diagnosis and treatment of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis in adults and children" has been developed (approved by MoH order (No. 870 of 23.05.2024 – http://surl.li/ubesa).
The development team includes specialists of the State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (the Center).
With the methodological support and information provision of the Center, leading practitioners and scientists in the fields of neurology, immunology and infectious diseases defined the basic principles of diagnosis and treatment of the disease – a standard of medical care and an evidence-based clinical guideline. They are based on scientific developments selected by a multidisciplinary working group as an example of best practice in providing medical care to patients with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis.
The main emphasis is on early detection of the disease. Timely diagnosis makes it possible to ensure a prompt start of treatment, which is important for preventing complications of the disease.
The standard and the clinical guideline are recommended for use in health care facilities providing primary and specialized medical care, and require interdisciplinary cooperation and integrated management of patients by a multidisciplinary team of specialists - general practitioners/family physicians, pediatricians, neuropathologists, pediatric neurologists, ophthalmologists, physical and rehabilitation medicine physicians, physical therapists, and radiologists. At the same time, the diagnosis of “acute disseminated encephalomyelitis” (ADEM) can be suspected by a physician of any specialty on the basis of the patient's development of focal (most often multifocal) neurological deficit characteristic of damage to the central nervous system. ADEM has variable clinical manifestations.
The State Expert Center has entered into the Register of Medical Technological Documents a standard of medical care and an evidence-based clinical guideline – “Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis in Adults and Children”.
