The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has approved the standard of medical care "Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in adults and children" (HSCT), MoH order No. 519 dated 17 April 2026. This is the first document that establishes uniform requirements for the organization and performance of this type of transplantation in Ukraine.

HSCT, or bone marrow transplantation, is used for leukemias, lymphomas, anemias and other severe diseases of the blood and immune system, as well as to support the condition of patients undergoing chemotherapy. For many, it is the only chance of recovery.

The approved standard covers the patient's full pathway – from determining indications and donor selection to transplantation, treatment and follow-up.

The document clearly regulates the organization of care and the requirements for healthcare facilities, and emphasizes the key role of the multidisciplinary team of physicians in decision-making and in supporting the patient at all stages of treatment.

In particular, it contains detailed recommendations:

  • for determining indications for allogeneic and autologous transplantation;
  • pre-transplant preparation (clinical assessment of the patient's and donor's condition, HLA typing, compatibility assessment, and others);
  • selection of the optimal donor among related, unrelated or haploidentical donors;
  • prevention, early detection and treatment of complications, including graft-versus-host disease and others.

Particular emphasis on informing – the standard provides for the mandatory provision to the patient or their representatives of complete information about the state of health, treatment options, possible risks, expected results and alternatives.

The implementation of the standard will contribute to the unification of clinical practice, increase the effectiveness of treatment and improve the quality of life of patients, as well as harmonize approaches to transplantation with international recommendations.

Information and methodological support for the development of the document was provided by the State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

The standard can be reviewed in the Register of Medical Technological Documents.
