On 25-26 April, an international research and practice conference dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster was held in Kyiv.
The event brought together scientists, physicians, managers and international experts to discuss the lessons of one of the largest man-made disasters of our time. The focus was on the long-term impact of radiation on health, modern approaches to risk assessment and response to radiation threats.
The conference was attended by representatives of leading international and national institutions, in particular the IAEA, WHO, the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and heads of nuclear power plants and research and educational institutions.
The State Expert Center was represented at the event by Deputy Director for Registration, Pharmacovigilance and Audit Olena Semenchenko and Deputy Director for Legal Affairs Anna Husieva.
Participants emphasised that Ukraine's experience in studying the medical consequences of radiation exposure is a significant contribution to world science, and the approaches developed remain relevant in the face of new risks.
A special role belongs to doctors – they were the first to stand up for the life and health of people during the liquidation of the consequences of the catastrophe and continue to fulfill this mission today.
The importance of international cooperation in the field of nuclear and radiation safety, which directly affects the resilience of healthcare systems, was emphasized separately.
Involvement in such professional events contributes to strengthening the Center's expert capacity and the introduction of modern approaches for decision-making focused on protecting patients' health.
