A standard of rehabilitation care for children with cerebral palsy and other organic brain lesions has been approved in Ukraine (MoH order No. 1870 of 11.12.2025 https://surl.lt/bqebqh)
The document is an important step toward standardizing and improving the quality of rehabilitation care for children with such conditions and is based on the best international recommendations and principles of evidence-based medicine.
The standard was developed on the basis of an evidence-based Clinical Guideline that takes into account modern international approaches to rehabilitation, early diagnosis, multidisciplinary care and long-term support of children with cerebral palsy. The developers include specialists of the State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Why is this important?
Given the growing number of children with disabilities in Ukraine and the stable prevalence of cerebral palsy (2–3 cases per 1000 newborns), the issue of timely, high-quality, and coordinated rehabilitation care is extremely relevant.
Standard:
- ensures a unified approach to the provision of rehabilitation care;
- promotes early intervention, which is critically important for achieving the child's maximum functional potential;
- supports individualization of rehabilitation taking into account the needs of the child and their family;
- defines the role of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team, which is key to effective support of patients.
For children and their parents/legal representatives, this means more predictable, consistent and high-quality care, focused not only on motor functions but also on participation in everyday life, education and social interaction.
The rehabilitation care standard is intended for a wide range of specialists, in particular:
- physical and rehabilitation medicine doctors;
- physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists;
- prosthetists-orthotists, psychologists, psychotherapists;
- rehabilitation nurses and therapist assistants;
- pediatricians, family doctors, pediatric neurologists, psychiatrists, orthopedic traumatologists;
- pediatric gastroenterologists, dietitians, nutritionists, surgeons, ENT doctors, audiologists, ophthalmologists;
- social workers, and others.
