The State Expert Center (the Center) conducted a health technology assessment and recommends considering the inclusion of the medicinal product edoxaban in the National List of Essential Medicines.
The medicinal product is used for the prevention of stroke in adult patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation who have one or more risk factors: congestive heart failure; arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, prior stroke or transient ischemic attack, age from 75 years.
Why this matters
Non-valvular atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained arrhythmia. It is the leading cause of cardioembolic stroke and other thromboembolisms that lead to disability and death. Therefore, patients at high risk of such complications require preventive anticoagulant therapy – medicinal products that reduce the blood's ability to form clots. One option for such treatment is direct oral anticoagulants – edoxaban also belongs to this class.
Edoxaban, together with other products of this group, was included in the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines in 2025. This confirms the proven efficacy and safety of the product.
What this means for patients
Today, patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation already have access to anticoagulant therapy, in particular within the framework of the Affordable Medicines programme.
If edoxaban is included in the National List, doctors will have another treatment option for the prevention of stroke and other thromboembolic complications in patients with atrial fibrillation.
