Ukraine is the first in the European Region to update clinical guidelines and standards for tuberculosis treatment in line with the WHO 2022 recommendations – the Center's specialists took an active part in their development.

The updated sector standards based on evidence-based medicine make it possible to significantly improve the quality of treatment of patients with tuberculosis in Ukraine, including among HIV-infected people and other risk groups, to improve the management of tuberculosis among children and adolescents, and to prevent the transmission of infection and the acquisition of drug resistance.

In particular, updated:

  • management of tuberculosis among children and adolescents, including the issues of BCG vaccination among HIV-infected children, modern approaches to the diagnosis of TB in children and adolescents; an integrated algorithm for deciding on the treatment of children under 10 years of age with probable pulmonary tuberculosis has been introduced; modern approaches to developing pediatric TB treatment regimens are described;
  • treatment standards for drug-susceptible TB by age category and disease severity. Shortened 4-month regimens for treating drug-susceptible tuberculosis have been introduced in place of the traditional 6-month regimens;
  • standards for the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) — the standard provides for regulating the choice of modern treatment regimens with priority given to all-oral treatment schemes. Ukraine is the first in the European Region to introduce innovative BPaLM/BPaL treatment regimens as part of routine use.

The Center's specialists, who worked in working groups on developing the documents, are convinced that the new standards will become a valuable guide in the work of doctors and help them combat the disease more effectively.
