How scientific discoveries become life-saving treatment for cancer patients – the Center’s team visited the research base of a leading university in Florida. The research institutions are part of UHealth, a health care system that offers the highest standards of diagnostics, therapy, and clinical research for cancer treatment programs in Florida.
During the visit, the Director of the Center Mykhailo Babenko, Deputy Director for Clinical Affairs Mykhailo Lobas, and Director of the HTA Department Oresta Piniazhko learned about the work of the Clinical Research Center and the Cell Therapy Laboratory at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. They also held a number of meetings at which they discussed a wide range of issues concerning advanced therapy medicinal products.
In particular, the following measures took place:
- A meeting with the Deputy Director for Translational Research of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Professor of Medicine Damian Green (Damian Green, M.D.) – he presented to those present the topic of development and use of advanced therapy medicinal products.
- Visit to the Cell Therapy Laboratory accompanied by its director Cara L. Benjamin (Cara L. Benjamin, Ph.D.) and familiarization with the main areas of activity.
- Meeting with a world-renowned scientist in the field of cell transplantation, Professor, Director of the Diabetes Research Institute Camillo Ricordi (Dr. Camillo Ricordi, MD) and Director of Laboratory Services, Cell and Biological Products Manufacturing under the cGMP standard – Xiumin Xu (Xiumin Xu, MS, MT).
The lively discussion covered compliance with GMP standards in laboratories and the use of stem cells in transplantation and cell therapy; regulatory and other issues were also addressed.
Recall that the Center’s team, led by Director Mykhailo Babenko, is on a working trip to America, where it has already taken part in this year’s advanced therapy medicinal products conference, Advanced Therapies Week.
The aim is to familiarize participants with the prospects/opportunities of clinical trials and HTA of advanced therapy medicinal products; exchange of experience; strengthening international cooperation and building ties.
